Ash Mundae

“Model Citizens” is the name of one of the songs on their new album, released October 17 by Red Hill Records.  Don’t be fooled by the name of the song.  Chuckie, Jeremy and Elisa of Ash Mundae are not model citizens.  They’re simply believers, driven to express and share their faith through their music.  The music is, according to Chuckie, melodic rock pop.  The phrase doesn’t do justice to the catchy tunes, those tunes you can’t get out of your head no matter how hard you try.  “The way that you show mercy, you’d think you had a plan” is a line from Model Citizens.  Do they have a plan?  “Yeah!” says Jeremy.  “We want to tour all the time and do music!”  Chuckie expounds.  “As writers and musicians, you want to expose as many people to your work as possible.  As believers, the point is to share your faith.”

So, that makes it easy.  Coffeehouses, youth camps, bars, festivals, churches and youth groups, it doesn’t matter, just let them play.  The music of Ash Mundae is influenced, according to members of the band, by such as Duran, Duran, the Police, Robbie Williams nd New Radicals.  Maybe so, but the songs on their debut album are distinctively original, written by brothers Chuckie and Jeremy.  “Songs are like children,”  Chuckie explains.  “They’re all your favorite.  The songs on this album are a great representation of who we are, and what we believe.”  So what do they believe?  The song “In God’s Eyes” speaks of what Ash Mundae says happens to everyone at some point in their life.  “You reach a place where you feel a need to draw strength from some source other than yourself.”

“I know that when God thinks of you

His love is like the sky and you shine like the sun

I know that you think that you’re hopeless

I know I’m right

In God’s eyes, you shine like the sun”

------ In God’s eyes – Ash Mundae

Ash Mundae hopes to point to Jesus Christ as that source.  A growing source of alarm for the members of this talented group of young musicians is a recent finding of the Center for Disease Control.  The fastest growing set in the USA for the Aids virus is – are you ready for this? – Kids, age 13 – 17.  “The worst part,” Chuckie says, “is that the studies show that a slight majority of these kids are church kids!”  Youth raised in the church, supposedly raised with morals and principles above those of their counterparts.  “It’s about purity,” Jeremy said.  “We want to raise awareness that only through purity, not condoms, or abstaining from different types of activities, only purity will stop this epidemic.”  Ash Mundae believes that purity begins in the heart.  That, and only that, will bring us as close as we can come on this planet to being “Model Citizens.”
